Pewaukee 4   Catholic Memorial 1

Pewaukee sophomore RHP Grant Ross went the distance and held a powerful Catholic Memorial line-up in check to lead the Pirates to a WIAA Regional Semi-Final victory on Tuesday night at WCTC.  Ross went 7 innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 run.  He struck out 7 and walked just 2.

Defense was the difference in the game, as Pewaukee made just 1 error, while Catholic Memorial made 4.

Pewaukee jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when senior C Masen Beatty reached base on a dropped 3rd strike with 2 outs.  Beatty's courtesy runner, junior Elliot Mueller, went to second base on a wild pitch, and scored when senior 1B David Bell hit a soft grounder to the short stop and the throw skipped past 1st base.

Ross held CMH scoreless until the 6th inning, when a 2-out single by junior 1B Chris Bhyre Jr. scored junior LHP Luke Fox, who led off the inning with a walk.

Pewaukee bounced right back in the bottom of the 6th inning with 3 runs to put the game away.  Bell again reached on an error, this time by the 3rd baseman, and ended up on second base.  Mueller pinch-ran for Bell, and went to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt by junior 3B Josh Cottrill.  Junior RF Justus Zemberi then laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to score Mueller with the go-ahead run, and Zemberi ended up safe at first.  Freshman LF Luke Sopha then lined a single to right center to put 2 runners on, and freshman 2B Logan Dobberstein laid a beautiful bunt for a hit down the 3rd baseline to load the bases with 1 out.  Pewaukee pushed across its final 2 runs courtesy of an errant pickoff throw and a wild pitch.

Sopha had the only multi-hit day for either team, going 2-3 with a run scored.  Mueller scored 2 runs.  Dobberstein and Geisel also had singles, and Zemberi had an RBI and a run scored.

Catholic Memorial's season ends with a record of 19-6.

Pewaukee runs its record to 23-5.  The Pirates move on to the WIAA Regional Final on Wednesday at 4:30 PM at Union Grove High School.
